Based on an API 312. I tried a pair of these a couple of weeks ago and they sound great. The only downside is that they don't have an output trim (much like the original).

That should work fine. Just make sure you turn it down (the M-Audio) enough so you don't overload the converter.

Or try one of these (similar price from the same distributor- Oceania Audio):

Not quite as high quality as the Warm audio but much easier to push into hot territory.

My heart is set on the warm audio. Would it be much of a mod to get an output trim put in?

Nope. According to Mr Warm Audio:
With a 3k pot and a 150ohm resistor you should be able to add an output pot fairly easily but I have not yet done this I have only mapped it out in theory. It wouldn't take too long to try I just haven't yet "past participle of get" around to it. If you're interested in trying it and have a 3k ohm pot I could instruct you on how to try it, you wouldn't need to tear much up, just remove 1 wire from the PCB board.

Clipping the pre can also sound cool on the snare, either the top or bottom mic, to bring out some extra bite if your snare sound is lacking.
