Just me and a nylon string...

Post by Ironbird13 »

heres a recording of my first solo acoustic set. its about 18 mins long. A little different to my "normal" stuff
Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.

I like the variation between the strumming and arpeggios. Very nice.

Truly beautiful. You've come a very long way in your playing, Jodie. I like the timing of the notes, and the percussion, and the general moodiness of most of it.

I quite like it. Esp. the bit at about 10:42

Interesting change! Are you still with Reaper's Luck, too?

You really should introduce the pieces though... bring out the character of them more. I go to every open mike I can, not so much to play my stuff (which hey, I could do at home anyway), but to practise presenting the songs to people in a "sandbox" type environment.

Holy crap... if you can do that with a nylon string... imagine what you could do with an acoustic guitar!!!

That is sounding great. I've listened to some of your other soundclips and I agree with alanp, you playing has really improved! You were great to start with, but even a novice guitarist like me can tell this is definitely on another level. keep it up! :-)

Are you playing your electric much? or mainly acoustic?

cheers Airdad, I pick up the electric every now and then, but mainly Nylon lately, I'd probably break my nails on a steel string acoustic ( yes I've grown my PIMA nails)
actually anyone got advise on strengthening nails?
I also have an undersaddle pickup to put in my nylon string when I figure out how. not sure to remove material from the bridge or the saddle to fit it. also not sure if it will need a preamp aswell...
but it will be fun once electrified, running through my pedalboard.... :mental:

I've been told that for nylons, you can get by with a vitamin supplement. There are clear varnishes that toughen nails as well.

On the other side of the scale, I've read that Ani Difranco would buy cheap false nails and glue and gaffatape them to her actual nails. Maybe she still does that.

Nylon string is a beautiful instrument. I'm glad to see the Forum has such a fine exponent of it.

What is the guitar, Ironbird? It records very well; sounds both balanced and crisp which a lot of classicals fail to do. I fell out of love with my perfectly reasonable Takamine after spending a month with a visiting Ramirez which just humbled every guitar in the room
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

cheers, I've had a few good comments on the sound and look of my nylon string, its actually an old Samick lc009 I picked up for about $80. has a "normal electric" width nut which I like. I also use Savarez strings, expensive but well worth it.

Wow, you've even got the foot stool! Congratulations! And I agree, the guitar does sound really good.

Was the photo taken at the same time as the recording?
