Ruby Baby (Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" Arrangement) - Complete Cover
Well, after many hours of making the backing track, recording vocals (each part triple-tracked), and mixing, it's done. This was a lot of work, fun, but a lot of work. I'm not a natural singer, so I'm not ashamed to say I put in a lot of effort on the vocals (and my voice started to give-up by the 3rd verse as it's right at the limit of my range), but no autotune was used. There's a guitar solo after the second verse; that was the easy part. Hope you dig it.
PS - see if you can hear some classic dialog nuggets I mixed into the "crowd" at the end .

Well done Joe, singing sounds good too. Did you do the bass part as well?
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Cheers, mate. I can play the bass line, and as much as I'd like to say I did, no, I did it on the computer. I found a really good bass patch that sounded close enough to a real bass that I just used it instead.jvpp wrote:Well done Joe, singing sounds good too. Did you do the bass part as well?
Cheers! Here's the score I used. His transcriptions are super accurate and detailed.foal30 wrote:here is a transcription of AJ's bassline

Wow!
Great jobs
This is one of my all time favorite albums
Getting those vocal harmonies worked out alone is no mean feat
Really cool.
Now for the rest of the album....

Cheers! Yeah, the vocals were the real challenge on this one, and just production-wise it's so daunting - Donald Fagen, mighty big shoes to fill. It's one of my favorite albums, too, start to finish. I've got scores for a few others on the album, so we'll see.StrummersOfThunder wrote:Wow!

Go on, tell us. I listen to both your take and the original and then I realised how complex it all is together. But I don't know what nuggets I should be hearing.PS - see if you can hear some classic dialog nuggets I mixed into the "crowd" at the end .

No worries. I started with just a generic crowd sound f/x mix I found on Youtube, and then mixed these in just for fun.jvpp wrote:Go on, tell us. At 3:45, hard panned L, the opening bit from Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On".
At 3:56, hard panned R is the classic "In Paris, you know what they call a Quarter Pounder?...A Royale with Cheese..." dialog between Travolta and Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction.
At 4:27, hard panned L is the "it's just the normal noises in here" from that bit of random stuff at the beginning of the album version of Tom Petty's "Even the Losers."

His transcriptions are super accurate and detailed. I used his "Ruby" transcription for my little project. You'll see he's got a few other songs from that album and further down the page quite a few Steely Dan transcriptions which I've played through, and they're right on the money, too.

Maxine - love that tune
Babylon sisters - classic. Some of the best sounding keys out there.
New frontier - makes me smile every time I hear that keyboard/bass intro.
