Eliminating computer generated noise?

My office is the size of a single bedroom and it's rammed with stuff. The thing is, just having the laptop on generates noise through the amps. Later today I'll try again without the power supply.

Thanks for the replies by the way. I wonder how many amps I've cursed for being noisy when all the time it was because my laptop was on...

Ah, yeah... I used to have the same problem. I *did* buy an interface (thanks, Polar Bear and Music Planet) BUT...

One thing that was a hassle on the laptop was this warble that I used to get, until Bender pointed out that I was monitoring the output through the laptop speakers while I was recording.

And make sure you really ARE going through the mike as well. It's easy enough, when a mike is close to the laptop, to mistake the signal from your laptop's built in mike with the signal from your own, external mike. I used to get heaps of background noise and it was just the laptop's mike. Audacity has the input/output choices on a little drop down list near the main menu.
