I reckon 9 songs is an album. I'd put a max of 6 on something if I was calling it an EP, but I guess it depends on length of songs. I'm partial to shorter albums myself, I like around 40 minutes.

It used to be that a Long Playing album was about 45 mins long, double that for a double LP.

I don't think it makes sense to think in terms of song numbers. If they're four very long pieces, is that an album or an EP?

Or, I have a... whatever it is by Nurse with Wound, that is one continuous piece for 130 minutes. Is that an EP?

You're better off thinking in terms of overall duration.

I'd call that an album, then.

LOL Yes, aren't they? :D

the one I was referring to is Salt Marie Celeste, which is one of my favourite albums, by anybody. So much intensity in something so superficially "laid back"

But I was wrong on the length it's only 60min, not 130. :P #onlyhalfawake

it's more to do with total time than number of tracks, EP & LP was designations for how much wax it would take up.

In CD/digital based music it doesn't really matter. A CD album could be up to 88 minutes long but that would take up 4 sides of a 12" LP

Nowadays you can fit more stuff onto vinyl, but the quality gets worse, so generally 45 min is the standard max.

But yeah with digital and crap you can put out a 23 song EP if you want, or an album with 3 ten minute songs or whatever

My new album is yet to be mastered but it looks like it's gonna be 10 songs and run at about 41 minutes. I had another 5 songs but I've decided quality is way more important than quantity.

Some of my favourite records are under 40 minutes.

The 90s saw bands releasing a lot of 70-80 minute albums just 'cause you COULD fit that much on a format for the first time without the cost of double the vinyl. Led to a lot of filler and some way too long records imho.

YMMV.

With His Masters Voice, we went into the studio to record an EP and came away with an album. Basically, just under 40 minutes/6 tracks.
It was getting stupid trying to find a term that adequately meant 'extra long EP'. lol
Fuck it, it's an album.

Had a meeting about pressing vinyl last week and 40 odd minutes is about the max before you start losing quality and 38 minutes will make it sound really good!

Having a turntable will make it even better.

Mike Gibson at Munki Studios in Wellington. Lots of analog comps and EQs into a big old valve 1/2inch tape recorder. Mixes sound great and hopefully the mastering will be the full gravy. :)
