Denmark Street is awesome, as much for the general coolness of the place and history of it than just the guitars and whatnot. Last time I was there in 2009 it wasn't so great but it was the GFC period and no one was making money so the quality of stock reflected that. Will be better now though! My fave is Andy's down the end on the left, they always have some real oddities and some great vintage stuff. The first time I went back in 1992 and they had 2 very early pre-CBS strats and a late 50s Les Paul (don't remember exactly the year), but now they're too valuable even for those guys.

Also fully agree with the pint in a local boozer and a proper curry. The thing to be aware of in London is if you are smack in the middle of the tourist areas, Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street etc, it is eye wateringly expensive... But bugger off down a back street and 5 minutes away from those places and its actually cheap.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Delayman wrote:Hi. Going to the States and UK over Christmas. Not likely to get loads of time in music stores (family trip), but if I do, what is likely to be worth looking at? Big price differences between NZ and there etc. Anybody have any advice?

Going to London, Manchester, Florida, New Jersey.

Thanks
When in the USA:

Stores: Guitar Centre - Used Gear. Just make sure you find the zip code for where you'll be staying and filter searches that way. I've had great success with them.

General buying: Craigslist - think the original Trade and Exchange. Lots of bullshit, but amazing bargains if you can be bothered.

Family shopping: outlet malls, the Premium Outlet franchise is a good starting point.

Shipping: Air Nz will charge you about $65 for an extra bag. You can tape at least two hard cases together with some cardboard around the outside.

I'm back!
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

and... how was it?
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

Trip report: it was December 2014 - and it was a great family holiday - seeing family in both UK and USA. No guitars were purchased or sold or even ogled in the 5-6 weeks offshore (from what I remember).
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

ooh - I am off to the UK in two weeks. I wonder if I can convince the wife that Sophisticats is a cool petting zoo where the kittens wear tuxedos?
