I went super cheap and just bought some Eris 4.5s - they should arrive in a few days. I'll let you know how they sound (not that I'm an expert lol)
Awesome. Cool yeah do let us know :)

Sorry for a dumbass question but are they USB (+ powered?) or Bluetooth or something?

Those are pretty hard to beat if you're buying new. Get in touch with Nigel at Oceania Audio Sales.

These are good for low $$
http://oceaniaaudio.bigcartel.com/produ ... nitor-pair

But these would be my pick, simply because they extend down a bit further (53Hz rather than 70Hz of the above ones):

No, you plug them into the Scarlett's monitor outs via balanced audio cables (TRS jacks or TRS Jack to XLR).

It's a bit overwhelming and confusing when you first start, but it's actually not that expensive to get going. I haven't read through all of the pages of this thread but for me, all up it cost a little under $300 to get started.

I purchased Cubase 7 online, from memory that was about $130 and it just downloads straight onto whatever laptop or PC you're going to be recording with. Picked up a Shure SM58 microphone from TradeMe for $55 and finally a Line 6 UX2 Audio Interface also from TradeMe for $100.

Took me a while to figure things out but once you're set up it's remarkably easy

Another vote for reaper, unless you need pro tools then it's probably your best option

Woah, arise, ye post of the dead!

I've been happily using Reaper for the past couple of months. I liked it so much I actually paid for it!

Here's some crap I bashed out. Not much to it, and I don't think I really got the drum loop synced right, but I like the fuzz sound (Solid Gold FX Sasori into a Small Stone if you're wondering. Into Amplitube, I think.)

lol didn't realize this was an old thread :) i was just gonna mention that you can put together a very easy to use pretty cheap recording setup these days with something like an ipad. i also still have an ipad2 and it works perfectly for the recording i do, which is just one track at a time, acoustic, electric, vocals etc. i use garageband to record and i use the virtual instruments within to put together songs.

the entire Gorillaz album "The Fall" was produced on an ipad. it can be a nice portable recording solution :)

I use a Line 6 Sonic Port to plug in and record guitars (electric and acoustic). I use a Korg Microkey 37 USB Midi keyboard for keys and triggering samples from different virtual instrument software on the ipad. I dont tend to add "drums" to much stuff as i usually only record basic ideas on the ipad but i have used things like Korg's iElectribe and some other drum machine virtual instruments to create drum tracks. There is also one built into Garageband. I also don't tend to record many vocals but when i do i use a USB mic, i think its a Samson Pro something or rather.

There are a ton of companies making sweet iOS recording gear. Software instruments, DAW's, USB microphones, interfaces, control surfaces etc.
