Anyone have a bulk eraser?

Post by Vince »

For people who missed my Facebook post...

does anyone in the Wellie region have a bulk eraser I can borrow?

I'm talking about an electromagnet that you wave over audio/video tapes and it erases them.

I ask because we're thinking of releasing something in audio cassette format only (take THAT vinyl snobs!) and while I have a heap of old cassettes we can use, I wouldn't mind cleaning up whatever is on there.

Before you make jokes, please bear in mind that I've already been through most of them on Facebook.

Genuine question - why have you chosen cassette tape for a release? Is it for a 'retro' factor or some other reason?
They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

a) for the pisstake factor. I'm sure we'll only ever get rid of 2 or three IF THAT. But yeah, for the joke, any more underground and you die.

b) I actually LIKED the old cassette releases (child of the 80s here), the photocopied booklets that had to fit in the case, the all the possibilities for artwork (I used to paint my playlist cassettes with airfix paint) and so on.

c) it gives me something to do with all those old cassettes.

d) yeah, the retro factor.

Ok I may have made some of the facebook jokes...

But

Cool idea! I always remember the Billy Bragg cassette with the first side had the Lifes a riot with spy v spy, and the other side was blank - with the title 'bootleg the bragg'!
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

We released our last EP on cassette (95% to take the piss). We also had a digital release though. Sorry I can't help you with the bulk eraser.

actually, as you're going to copy over the tapes... wouldn't it be cooler to have some random shit on the ends and other sides? No need to erase!
I want revenue for that idea....

For sure, but some are old 4 track cassettes so the only solution is to wipe them and start again. They've been "formatted" wrong.

Plus, some of the random shit is other people's music, which I believe is a no-no.

Anyway, I suppose I can just let the cassette record all the way to the end, but it'd be nicer to just bulk erase them. Oh, well...

Yep, that's also something we've been thinking about.

What happens if you just put it on the magnet at the back of a guitar speaker?

I know where there is one but you'd have to be really keen; it's in Auckland and it weighs a ton.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Well, I inadvertently left a pickup on a cassette for a few days once.

When I played it, I found that the sound kept dropping out but you could still hear a lot of it.

I guess the speaker would be a bit better... might be worth a try, actually.

There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.
