Any success with Fredman micing technique?

Post by griff »

Was watching a Glenn Fricker vid yesterday outlining this approach.
In Flames used the dual SM57 method on their Clayman album.. a great sound they achieved on that one. Bold, punchy and rich. (I understand a fair bit of mastering is involved though)
Any of you used this method?
What other mic combinations could you recommend for heavy guitar?

Link the vid if possible please? would be interested to hear more. Was the same box recorded in parallel with different speakers in the cab or was one on axis and the other off or just out a bit?

I like SM57 + MD421 but for home recordings I can't really be bothered with 2 mics. 1x SM7B works great for me.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

Here he is going into more detail for peeps wanting to know more.

This is cool, I've heard of these sort of techniques but never really went hard enough to do this sort of thing. I only have one pre and one 57. Maybe I could record on axis the reamp the same part off axis. Idk. Thanks for bringing this up, cool lesson.
