NMD: Vintage Mic Porn

Post by bender »

Oooh, what's this?

Image
Could it be? Why, yes! It's a pair (not matched sadly) of vintage (I believe 70s) Neumann KM84s!

They ought to go nicely with this:

Vintage STC (Coles) 4038 Ribbon mic!

Image
Designed by the BBC in 1961 and originally built by STC, these are one of the most well known and sought after ribbon mics. I'm not certain, but I suspect this is probably early 70s vintage.

One of the KM84s and the 4038 are ex Marmalade in Wellington (not unlike me in actual fact). I picked them up from one of my old colleagues for a ridiculously good price, and then found the second KM84 from a Czech seller on Ebay. Fuck me they all sound good.

Need to find a replacement badge for one of the Neumanns. What a treat! This was part of a pretty huge studio overhaul. I sold a whole pile of gear that I didn't love and have been really selective about what to replace it with. I've ended up with fewer things, but definitely a big step up in quality.

I'm seriously thinking about a coles. I used to have an aea r84 ribbon but didn't have much cause to use it in my old space in Sydney. .. so investigating a replacement or alternative. Anything else I should be looking at?..obviously depends on application etc...

Yeah, definitely application specific. Coles aren't all that easy to get here, but AEA and Royer both are. AEA R92 is a cool sounding mic, as is the Royer 121 or 101. I also love the Sennheiser MD441 or 421 and Shure SM7b. The MD441 sounds bonkers good. If you don't have a great room, the Beyerdynamic M160 is a hupercardioid ribbon mic and is also a great choice.

Well, in the case of the big ass ribbon, the new ones are pretty close to the originals. The Neumanns, on the other hand, are a different story. They definitely don't make 'em like they used to!

Most of those are ribbons (apart from the Sennheiser MD441, 421 and Shure SM7b). The Beyerdynamic M160 is a fantastic hypercardioid ribbon mic.
