Definitely a guitar thread not keyboard related

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

BG get the ban hammer out I’m going to ask about keyboards

Anyone here clued up on keys

I’d like something for the home studio

Tempted by Korg sv1 as I mostly want finished EP sounds and decent hammer action but boy oh boy it’s a brutal rabbit hole if you’re not in the know

So if any experts out there or even if someone has a keyboard they want to move on that would fit the bill ….

I'm not an expert, but my 2c is to separate the physical keyboard from the sound engine in your thinking. Get a decent keyboard/piano with MIDI, worry more about action and reliability than sounds. Sound engines go out of fashion, but a good keyboard will last a long time. And you can then buy all the plug-ins you fancy to get the sounds you want.

Different story if you are using it live though.

See this is the sort of thing I’m scared of navigating but it’s becoming obvious that’s the way to go

It really is the hammer feel and action I’m putting g as priority but then I want a barky Rhodes sound and I know some keys that will do they but presumably it’s all software at the end of the day

Indeed! As a gigging keyboard, Nord can't be beat, I'm told. But even then, who wants a version 1 now? Or even a 2?

Some beautiful VST E-pianos and organs available. Kontact is well worth a look at with Hammond and Fender so close to the real macoy you would be imagining any difference.

You can get midi controllers with semi-weighted keys for a reasonably price.
A sure cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree.

I was playing an Electro 2 18 months ago. GREAT organ, CP-70, rhodes, not very good on the acoustic piano, but even that was useable. Really nice keyboard action.

Unless you're gigging out, MIDI controller and the many free sounds on GarageBand or similar.

I play a Hammond SK-1, I'm mostly interested in Hammond B3 so the Hammond was the best choice for me. It has excellent pianos, rhodes, and decent strings. I'd love a synth to add, maybe a MicroKorg.

Not gigging, tho would be nice to maybe sss some keys one day to the bull kelp surfers
So mainly at home
Thing is I’d like to be able to have an organ that you can drag out for a jam without a lap top
Maybe too much to ask ?

I'd reconsider weighted keys.... I bought a master controller with weighted keys to control my nord 2. Stupidly thinking that would be an awesome combination....

Hammond B3/C3 don't have weighted keys, they even have waterfall keys (no lips on the edges) and the weighted keys do really hamper that style of playing.

Great if you're used to playing a traditional piano but not if you want to do palm sweeps on a hammond through a marshall stack.

Just my tuppence worth.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Oh and another thing...

My master keyboard, I stored it on its end for a year or two. The weighted keys keyboard controllers should be stored flat or it buggers them basically - only one of my keys is not working but a mate of mine lost half of his from storing it on its end for a month.

If you want to play mostly hammond b3 stuff, you want the light keys (waterfall if you can get them). If you want to play piano, go with weighted keys...

hope thats less confusing.

It happened to me, a couple of years ago. Excellent price (2K), reputable vendor (music professional) convenient location (Rem), and yet I hesitated.
