More stolen stuff ... this time 4-5 guitars (think he's listed one twice - he's going to update one and let me know about the other)

That Rockshop link has the NZ history of theft from musos in it. Lots of sad/angry days represented there. One thing i love about my apartment, it's extra secure. RS ever considered working with the other chains for setting up a muso's insurance coop?

no. difference between private property and personal. a musical instrument is definitely the latter.

Tried a few years ago ... thought about setting up a stolengear.co.nz where musos and everyone could list their stolen gear. There was no buy-in from anyone and no way to monetize it even to cover it's costs.

Did you charge people to list their gear there? No you couldn't do that.
Did you charge people to remove their found gear? No you couldn't do that.
Advertising? Back then wasn't as easy to setup.

One of the other things was the ability for abuse. People posting their mates stuff as stolen for a lark. Or people using it to commit insurance fraud. One of the ways around it was to make every item have a police file number. But validating the police file number was difficult and it was fairly easy to take a file number and add a space to it to create a new number that would be accepted etc.

But it was going to be too hard to setup ... probably a lot easier now that the police have streamlined their police file numbers.

When we set up the stolen gear section of the website ... we asked Cash Converters to let them know. They couldn't have been less interested. Perhaps that has changed now.

Anyways, perhaps someone with more time could do it.

Sounds about right. I'm fairly positive that some of the gear I've seen in cashies over the years hasn't been 100% legit.

I know that its worthless on the black market. Cant sell it online? WE never seen anybody turn here with a new guitar and not realise its been stolen?

Oh ok - good point. Was going to incorporate that into my reply. As we had thought about monetising it by way of sponsor ads for an insurance broker whom specialised in musical equipment - and then it moved out to being more than just musical equipment.

We had an insurance broker here in ChCh but he went to a mainstream insurer and the idea kinda lost steam with the expansion of the idea.

still wondering who the fuck has my tele (whitewash 52 old pine). God that shit is frustrating. Replacement guitar doesn't compare really.

I work for a web company so I'll get the hosting for free. I've been waiting for an excuse to set up my own web project to have a play around with, so this is good for me too.

The only cost initially will be my time and the domain name, happy to put that up myself. Would be good to work with you to get it set up Dave, seeing as you've had experience running this kind of thing. Once its up and running it should be easy to keep ticking over.

Done well, it could have huge traffic. I mean if Flappy Bird can generate USD$50,000 per day in ad revenue - you might get enough traffic to pay for itself with some insurer ads on there.

I would suggest opening it up to every body who has had something stolen.

Make it strong, robust and popular - and then sell it to the world ... make millions, MILLIONS!!!!!!!!
