I wonder if a former resident of the property (previous owner/flatmate/tenant) has a key or something, cause that's proper odd.

Yeah still really odd. Most burglaries are opportunists. If it was a random burglary, it would be whatever is easiest to flog and easiest to grab. You often hear of them walking past very vaulable items simply because tvs and dvd players are much easier to flog for a quick buck.

Honestly if this was tucked away in a case, they wouldn't take it (and if they did, surely they would take the whole case?

Very strange.

Depends. State have a policy option where you're covered even if you leave the door open.
Yup, Contents Comprehensive. Contents Essentials is the one that states theft is only covered by proved forced entry.

Yeh it's super odd. I only have vague suspicions about neighbours and no real clues so I hope the detective can give me some insight into any possibilities when we get to have a chat.
We've been in this same rental for 6+ years so it'd be again unlikely but possible for an ex-tenant to have a key.

There's some possibility I didn't put the guitar away in its case and someone who randomly entered the property while we were out opportunistically picked it up and pulled the door locked behind them, but I have no idea. This sucks how frustratingly mysterious it is! Hhaha. That and being hundreds of dollars out of pocket with the possibility of more thefts sucks too.

It's just like vampires. Once you invite them in, they can come back any time and you're stuffed.

And fox spirits too. Once you answer the phone and don't say "moshi moshi" then they've got you.

I think we might be getting somewhere with this. Well, going somewhere, if not getting there just yet. Actually I really like the opportunity to talk with the police because I like police, although I'm cynical about how far they'll be able to follow through with any investigation but it seems cool for now that they're recording the things I say and stuff.

Again I feel dumb e-mailing around Cash Converters and everywhere saying "watch out for my stolen guitar, but I don't have a serial number. It's black and has strings". I haven't had any replies from them yet... :lolno:

You said that you're in a flat. Someones not getting in from one of the other flats are they? Like going up out of their flat, up into the roof cavity, and getting into your flat through the ceiling 'man hole.' or something like that.

Maybe they took the guitar out of the case, hoping you wouldn't immediately notice that it's gone.

I think you might be right actually. It's going to be hard to find evidence though >_<

Honestly that still doesn't fit the MO for burglary though. Why would an opportunist care if you notice in one day or three? They've already sold it for $80 by then.

The general MO is get in, find shit you can sell asap, and get out. There's no way a typical burglar would

- leave everything untouched
- not rustle through drawers
- take something out of a case
- leave the case there

This is still REALLY weird lol. I hope you get to the bottom of it. It still sounds like you've misplaced it, perhaps someone has borrowed it or, at a stretch, someone who you invited onto the property has taken it.

well my brother recently got some stuff pinched from our place when we had some unscrupulous shit heels across the road. His wallet,5 bucks in change and a packet of smokes. To get to the kitchen bench they were placed on they had to walk past all manner of gear porn and electronic wonderland.
Never underestimate the logic of the opportunist. The same shitheels came back later and stole a vase that was full of my bro's ciggy butts.Fuckin ciggy butts.
Best bet is to keep hammering the pawn shops and hope it pops up.Ive been keeping an eye on a few of the ratshit buy/sell groups on FB for ya.

Yup, great example, that's exactly my point. Seems SO weird that they would go to all the effort of removing a guitar out of the case, when they could just take the whole bloody thing? Or something else much easier to pinch/sell.

The example I was talking about was very similar. The thief walked past an Apple Mac, a TV and some other interesting stuff, and grabbed the guitars and walked off. I'm assuming the other items are more difficult to sell due to passwords, tracking etc etc/

Yeah it is beyond weird. I think it's fair to say that thieves are less intelligent than most people, but on the other hand they would know more about how to steal things and what's easily moveable than I would.

It's possible I left the guitar out of the case and by the window one day, but I don't specifically recall doing so.
But yeah once someone's in a house then they could pretty quickly pick up a lot more than one guitar and leave through the door if they wanted, that's how I expect burglaries would normally work: they'd have an idea ofthe things they want then get in, grab everything and leave again ASAP. The only thing I could guess from someone taking hard-to-notice things out of drawers and wardrobes would be that it's someone close and with regular access, who wanted to be able to keep gettign in for as long as possible - but they would've spoiled that by taking a guitar. :x

The through-the-roof option has some merit but that neighbour is an unlikely suspect... so .. visitors? I haven't had a single one that's been out of my sight in that week of opportunity for the guitar to disappear.

This is dumb. I hope the insurance comes to the party anyway, that's the main thing. Actually the main thing is that I hope it gets resolved and I'm not left with a grudge against a likely suspect that'll probably escalate, that would be the worst thing.

(Cheers for watching the buy-sells, I'm sure it's a good excuse ;D I'm also on a couple of them too.)

The getting in part is still odd, but the theft doesn't sound that strange to me. If anything, it's clever.

You can't offload a bunch of high value stuff at a Cashies or similar without someone checking, or at it least looking a bit suspicious. However a guitar is standard fodder for those companies, but by taking one out of a case means it'll probably take a while before you notice and by then the thief would be long gone with a handful of Cashies dollars. Even if it's found at a Cashies store later, they can claim innocence, because it wasn't reported as stolen when they got it.

Quick turnover for some P money.
