Recording with Audacity
The software; not the attitude.
Warning: Total Noob, Klutz and Ignoramus zone.
I have Audacity on my computer. Version 1.3.13-beta. So If I wanted to record myself, what else do I need?
My soundcard is whatever came with the Dell
I have 2gb of ram.
I have not the slightest idea what I'm doing.
I'm absolutely not going to blow good cash on an Apple, Blackberry, Lemon or any other form of fruit.
I also don't have a Mic so suggestions welcome. (SM57 I suppose?)

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Yeah, you need either a mike or a lead or some way to get the sound into the PC. After that it's pretty straightforward.slowfingers wrote:The software; not the attitude.

Re: Recording with Audacity
The M-Audio sound card JB is selling could be worth grabbing. It'll let you plug any mic you like into it. $100 is a good price.

I'm happy to lend you a mic to get you started if it helps.

Re: Recording with Audacity
I started my illustrious recording career with a Pod into the line in on the laptop. By illustrious recording career, I mean I got the Pod working with Audacity, recorded some stuff, got bored with it and then it went under the bed.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Thanks Ben. I have 3 singing bandmates, one of whom used to be NZ's AKG Rep. If they can't rustle up a suitable mic, I'll go solo.benderissimo wrote: I'm happy to lend you a mic to get you started if it helps.

Re: Recording with Audacity
I started off in a similar vein (mind you, my playing's shite), cable from guitar to line-in on soundcard and recording into Audacity. Cheap and cheerful and ok for getting ideas down. It'll help if you download and install asio4all from http://www.asio4all.com/ if you're not going to get an external soundcard. The latency will drive you nuts otherwise.
As others have said though getting something like the M-Audio card of jbs will be of huge benefit

Absolutely free?mr_sooty wrote:Why use Audacity when you can get Reaper for the same price?

Re: Recording with Audacity
If you're an absolute Noob at recording, Reaper can be a bit daunting. The good thing about Audacity is it' is relatively feature free, limiting if you're good with DAW software already, but great to get started with without confusing the crap out of yourself.mr_sooty wrote:Why use Audacity when you can get Reaper for the same price?
