Should have pointed out that if you'd kept one of the HD500's  Glad my fast track didn't sell now that I've sold the HD!

Recording Solution For $200?

I ended up buying a Fast Track for $100 on TradeMe. Next step is seeing if our mic works and if not, getting an SM57.

See!? Sometime I do listen to advice on the forum! :-)

Instead of a 57... get a Red 12. It'll be way nicer for acoustic instruments, and it's about 1/4 the price. Or a pair of Greens if you want to be able to record vocals and guitar simultaneously (but separately).

Well, I'll see if out mic works first, but I'll keep that in mind. The first option, anyway - I don't think using two mics at once is possible with a Fast Track.

Seriously, try a cheap PC mic straight into your PC. There's usually a setting to boost a mic's input.

This suggestion, as valid as it may be, ticks all the wrong boxes.

So, in your house, are you the only one who must sell something if you want something new?

Hmmm, seems to work that way in my house. Or at least, that's what my wife thinks.

Do what /ed said and get the red12, or at least a condenser, you don't want am sm57 if you're going to be mostly recording acoustic guitar, sm57 is primarily designed for loud noises, like your, if it's still your, JCM800 wound up, or snare drums etc!

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I recorded my Lowden this week, and got what I think is the finest recording if it that I've done. And the mic was an old bog standard SM57

This. They might be designed for other purposes but you can get good results on just about anything with a 57. There are plenty of better sounding mics out there but few are as universally accepting as a 57.

Hence my "primarily" comment, and someone with a whole lot of experience should be able to get reasonable results with just about anything, but for someone brand new to the whole idea, an sm57 wouldn't be ideal would it...better results with something more purpose designed.

Buying one new blows the budget, though. And there seem to be a lot of fakes floating around which would make me hesitant to buy one second hand. Also, germs.

Absolutely, but if you're recording acoustic guitar and vocals, an SM57 is more useful than a small daphragm condenser. That's more what I'm getting at. I have 2 Red12s and 2 Green12s and I wouldn't choose them to record vocals.
