I can afford one mic. Is there a mic that is suitable for doing:
vocals (primary)
ambient room mic'ing (for recording band rehearsals) and
close-up cabinet mic'ing (for home stuff with backing tracks, etc.)
I realize there are serious compromises here, but I'm not after "ideal"; just "suitable." And not a lot of $$$. I've done some research, and it seems that the SM 58 was mentioned often. Is that a viable candidate, or are there better alternatives?
Feel free to recommend a decent interface, too, if you have any suggestions. I've got basic recording skills, but I'm really out of my element when it comes to the new gear and the finer points.

Get one of those multi patern condensers like the cad somethingorother 3000, do most things OK, you'd need phantom power though!

Re: General, All-Purpose Mic?
What's your budget for each? CAD M179 is a very good mic for the money although it's not super flattering on some vocals. If I could pick only one mic from my collection to keep it would be the ADK Hamburg (no dealer here unfortunately). It's easily the most versatile of all my mics in that it can sound pretty decent in front of anything. You can get the current version for about $350US but the older version comes up on Ebay every so often and they're also really good. Otherwise and SM57 or SM58 is a pretty solid choice.
Re: General, All-Purpose Mic?
The chap who used to sell ADK on trade me is lavielive, something to do with the Hamilton theatre apparently, he hasn't had any listed for a while though, couldn't hurt to ask him maybe?
His website is something like www.lavielive.co.nz, I'll try and find it again!

Here's his website, nothing like lavielive.co.nz at all!
http://smsaudio.co.nz/
No ADKs on his site anymore though!
