Cheeky work question - we're wanting to record some training conferences at work - microphone in the middle of the table for an 8hr session sort of deal. I reckon they're going to run into file size / length issues.
Audacity records at 700mb/hr for .wav format, and potentially will run into issues with files over 4GB.
Can anyone recommend some recording software that will compress on the fly ie- record direct to MP3 and be able to handle 8hr sessions?
I'd prefer freeware, but if there isn't a free option it'd be good to be able to give them a price on something that will do the job.
Cheers!

Reaper will do it (record to compressed media). But it also supports large wavs if your drive is also formatted to handle that, orr you can configure it to create new files every x MBs. Not free as such, but completely unencumbered, lasts forever, fully functional 'demo' (apart from a nag screen while loading).

Doubt you'll find much worthyness for free, but in that situation, it might be better to get one of those Zoom or Boss thingies that take SD cards, and you can just keep putting in another!
the micro Boss recorder can record to MP3, can't remember off my head how long in hours, but it can take a 1GB card!

I recorded a 2 1/2 hour meeting using voice memo on my iPhone, just sitting on the table in front of me. The file size was only 65MB*. Audio was clear enough to hear everyone on playback.
* low bitrate mono .m4a file.
