Fane speakers

Post by robnobcorncob »

Anyone have much experience with Fanes? I have a Classic 150 12" which I think was stock in some old Rockit combos. That's all the search function could tell me. I'm interested because I have on sitting in a massive P.A bin and it sounds killer with my Mesa, despite the fact that it could do with a recone. Obviously it's no Crescendo (never played one however) but I think it's a great speaker either way, nice and smooth, tight under high gain. No flubby bass or fizzy treble.

They were used in Rockits for quite some time IIRC. Anil wouldn't have used anything that wasn't up to the task.

Yes, Rockits have been the only place I've seen them also.
They sure sound nice in that situation, imo.

Actually they were OEM for the old 70's Hiwatt cabs and even now you can order Hiwatt cabs with either fanes or celestion speakers. The fanes are supposed to sound quite a lot better than the celestion-loaded cabs.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

I've got a pair of PA bass bins, Fane 18" 400w, built by a luthier who lived in Upper Hutt, it would have been late eighties. The name on the bins has faded off but I think he called himself 'Music Works'?? ( I'll try have another look tonight ) the bins are made from two layers of 19mm pine ply (38mm thick).
A very nice speaker, I use one of them for bass guitar duty.
2024; I have explored the extent of the perimeter dome, there is no escape. I am become Morpheus

When I was in Auckland I saw a Hiwatt speaker cab in Music Planet for $2999. I'm guessing it had the Fanes rather than Celestions? The Hiwatt head cost a bit more than the cab, that's all I remember. It was droolworthy.

You should, then you'd realise it's not just a box with speakers in it... although whether or not the Hiwatt cab is approximately 6 times better than your Marshall cab is another matter...

Depends how loosely you define 'Box'. plus a 1922 will have Gt12-75s won't it? urghh...

Anything over 2k for a speaker cab is nuts yea, agreed.

I do recall reading an article about Jim Marshall's 4x12 quad design. He said very simply there was no design - it was just the easiest way to fit 4 x 12" speakers enclosed in a cabinet.

I remember reading somewhere that the Bogner 4x12s (standard ones, NOT the UberKab) were based on a 70's Marshall metal handle 4x12" then tweaked to taste. I don't think Bogner can do anything badly..
