You should, then you'd realise it's not just a box with speakers in it... although whether or not the Hiwatt cab is approximately 6 times better than your Marshall cab is another matter...

yes!! i reckon 2K is top $$ for a speaker box
It takes me a day to make a proper 2x12 speaker cab, then another 3 or 4 hours to tolex and grillcloth it. But they are made by hand, perhaps I should make a few to sell at $450 a piece - so minus the cost of the ply/second hand speakers/tolex/grillcloth that would leave me with roughly lets say 10 bucks for 12 hours work

Nah I'll stick to programming....
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Or you could get a Reeves amp with Vintage Purple speakers in it for half that.. http://www.reevesamps.com/index.php?opt ... &Itemid=48

Vintage Purples are apparently very close to a vintage Fane. It's just a pity you can't get the speakers separately..

Price issues aside (and it's worth noting that supply of Fanes is intermittent these days) the Fanes in the Hiwatt cabs sound amazing. The Handwired Townshend-style Hiwatt head into the fane cab is one of the most amazing clean tones I've heard. I can totally see why Gilmour uses those amps and cabs as a basis for a large pedal rig. The crunch is also great, but by that stage you are sterilising any living thing within a kilometre. I should know, I cranked that Hiwatt rig.

Hmmm so are Reeves and Harry Joyce amps just Hiwatts essentially? or did they put their own twist on them? or is it more complicated, like the whole Matamp/Green/Electric amp thing Fiasco?

I'm not sure about HJ. I think he modified the Hiwatt circuit a bit. He used to wire Hiwatt chassis.

Reeves build Hiwatt clones as well as their own designs. The DG/CP/custom 50/100 are Hiwatt circuits. The rest aren't. Reeves don't have anything to do with Hiwatt though.

My friend Jamie has a Hiwatt Custom 20 with 2x10inch Fanes. We both agree that amp sounds far better with my Mesa Boogie 4x10 cab with Alinco Jensens. We then disconnected 2 of the Jensens so it was a fair test, and it still sounded better, way more character.

I thought Reeves was working at Sound City amps in London and decided to leave and start Hiwatt with Harry Joyce doing the wiring? That was my understanding (er... what I've learnt since this morning )

Reeves amps hasn't anything to do with Reeves the person.

Original Hiwatts were made by Hylight (Dave Reeves) until he died in 81. They were then made by Biacrown (I think a collection of ex Hylight employees) until suppliers stopped supplying them. That's the end of the original Hiwatts. I don't think anything else Hiwatt has anything to do with Dave Reeves, they just (ab)use his name or brand.
