Dumble-shmumble. What's it all about?

Post by Molly »

Anybody here able to articulate what the Dumble tone is? Seems to be treated as the Holy Grail by some but I can't help think that whatever it is, it's still only a specification that could be reproduced. So, why hasn't it been? Or has it?

Here's Mick from Guitarist getting excited about a chance to crank one up. Sounds nice an' all that but I'd believe you if you told me it was a Boogie or Fender somethin' or other we were listening to.

It's basically a smooth, sustaining OD a la Robben Ford. I'm sure there is a Dumble clean sound but all people are talking about is the OD lead tone when they say 'Dumble'. Zendrive is the most revered of the pedal versions of 'that sound'.

Listened to bits of the demo in that link. Maybe we're spoiled for choice these days or maybe these amps have to be experienced as much as heard but it didn't sound particularly special to me.

Here's a far better demo of what I think of as the Dumble tone:

Try this one.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Of the demos I think I like the tones in the OP best but I'm not sure that they're 'signature' Dumble tones (based on the links in later posts).

so funny, people trying to compare a tone when we are all listening to it on completely different equipment with completely differing inbuilt frequency responses and eq
Guitarists are passionate but completely mad
I notice differences between youtube clips Ive heard at work when I listen to them at home again later but my ears are crap
I can setup a new tonepatch, play it for hours and love the whole vibe, get up the next day, same gear and think what the hell was I thinking last night, sounds like crap
sure its all in the mind
