Restorers of Gunns - Lower NI

Post by Eruera »

Found another blast from the old man's past, some sort of Gunn 50 combo.

Now that there's that one as well as the previously discovered double-Gun I'm starting to think that it might be cool to get them restored.

I suppose I could get them up to Auckland but ideally looking for someone lower North Island.

What kind of appraisal of the work required do you think I could get from someone, wouldn't want to go ahead and then have it run into the thousands and thousands

Your old mans's is like a treasure trove. There aren't any more pedal steels floating around in there?

Ben from Red Witch is an amp guru with plennty of knowledge of the old Kiwi/aussie stuff. AmpStig is his business, probably on Facebook. I'd be willing to bet the wait time on restoration will be looong but he'll do a cracker job

That's a good idea. He could also tweak it up to how you wanted it. I spoke to him a while back about an unrelated issue, and he told me about a Gunn or amp that he converted to Marshall plexi specs. He said it was quite easy and not really expensive.

looks pretty good really.
it would be a good challenge to try some of it your self. it will need the large caps replaced, but everything else looks ok. give it a clean with some compressed air, get the cap values and order them, might be 15 bux each. easy to remove and replace, just make sure you put them back correctly. concentrate and be patient and you might be the amp guru lower south island
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

I would give it a clean and run it up without the output valves and a 100 watt lamp in series with the 240v supply.
Be VERY careful this amp has 540 Volts on the capacitors!
The large caps are often still perfectly ok on these old Gunns and Holdens.
I am modding a Gunn 200 slave, adding the Marshall Major active tone controls at the moment.
The can capacitors are all fine, the amp still puts out 200W clean power.
you could probably get your amp going for very little outlay.
One of the output EL34s has lost vacuum and turned white on top.
You also need a couple of mods in the power supply to make the amp more reliable, I have an updated schematic if you need it.

I only mentioned the large caps because they look like they are bent on the chassis.
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.
