Anyone running a 5751 in their preamp?
Got a couple of JJ 5751's on order. I'm hoping they smooth out the Overdrive a little on my Jet City 22h. Anyone use these tubes?

They are great at lowering the gain of a particular section. It may not smooth out the tone but it will possibly reduce fizziness.

I tried a JJ one in my Soldano, it did lower the gain but it made the low end sounding really hollow in a strange way. I much prefer the JJ ECC83MG for lowering the gain.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A
Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

Used a 5751 for a long time. I'm a fan of lower gain V1 tubes. Have dropped again to an AT7 in my Jansen. It's given me more headroom and way more volume than I know what to do with.
The design of your amp and your aural expectations mean you should just experiment. My AT7 is a brand new old GEC. It doesn't sound anything like the equivalent JJ at all.

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

A 5751 is very similar to a 12ax7 just low er gain. AT7 is a different beast not just lower gain.
I used a 5751 in my Orange amps in the past to tame the gain, it gives you more control 'sweep' on the gain knob but doesn't usually sound much different, they can lose a little sparkle though.
Backing the volume control on the guitar off a bit can help a lot with top end harshness when playing at lower volumes.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
