Mark V all day. If I didn't decide to go back to modeling I would have happily owned the V forever.

Hmmm interesting, thanks!werdna wrote:People say "The Mark V takes ages to dial in." as if they were in a passenger jet in which the pilot had just passed out from a heart attack and they were being asked by the control tower to land.griff7628 wrote:I'm curious how the Mark V was better to you than the ED tonally?werdna wrote:Owned a Mark V, ED and Maverick.
No question - the Mark V.
Sparkling clean; grinding tweed; Santana; very, very close to bright Marshall crunch; Metalica; very, very close to Recto violence.
A lot have said the ED is hard to beat but you have to play it loud, so I guess that can be a problem.
Isn't the Mark V quite hard to dial in? I like an amp that I dont have to spend hours turning dials
Clean, tweed, Santana and Metallica are easy to dial in - just read the knobs. As for Marshall, a forumite mate and I sat his Mark V next to a Marshall 100 watt head, with a head switcher, and cloned. Recto - do the same. Write it down in case you forget. Duct tape the settings on the side of the head. As long as you have hands that work, you can set it up in seconds.
Why Mark V over ED? You can clone all the ED tones with the Mark V. But not vice versa.

Never owned a Mesa, but played through a few. My favourite is the Dual Rec, it just suits me. Not that helpful, sorry.

Tough call. Either RA or Stiletto. Not the MkV versions I've tried. Worst was the Express though. Guess it depends what you're after.

Mark V is probably the most flexible. I currently own an ED and love it, I don't think the MKV can sound like an ED to be honest but I expect it comes close enough for it not to matter that much.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

If the ED doesn't sell I won't be unhappy about it, I do love the sound of it.

Can't really say. Never owned or played one, apart from a 20/20 EL-84 power amp that ran my rack system back in mid 90s. Sounded fine and was reliable. Seen Dual Recs doing Metallica style chugging' in the rockshop and parties etc. They sound pretty good for that style. I like demos of the snakeskin Santana amp too.

I'm actually picking up an Engl Screamer 50w head tonight. I've heard good things about them, especially with regards to build quality and versatility.godgrinder wrote:However if you're looking for Marshall-ish tones without the fizz, some of the Engl models might be a better choice. Screamer/Thunder/Retro/Artist Edition etc.
