Anybody here had such a mod performed and can maybe offer some advice about the pros and cons? Thanks.
Guy put one in my Marshall JMP non master volume. Unsure what type, Ryan told him how to do it and gave him the parts. (They must know each other)
Worked o.k I guess. Guy seemed to have his reservation's about it though. Easily reversable, the pot just replaced one of the speaker out jacks.

I could probably use the hole for the trem footswitch socket. Wonder why he had his reservations... Can you recall what it cost? Thanks.

I can't really recall re cost. I got new power tubes also so vaguely recall a few hand shandy. His work is well priced anyway, so probably wouldn't be much.
He hadn't done a PPIMV before, so it was a foreign mod I think. The first time I asked for it he put a pre phase inverter master in as he wasn't familiar with it. Was a few years back now, so might have done a few more since.

It messes with the negative feedback, which is why the presence control becomes basically non-functional. Could be the reason some people are not keen on it.
My take on PPIMV and cascading mods is that if you need to milk every bit of available gain out of a plexi at lower volume then you might as well just buy a 800. But of course a plexi looks way cooler.

I have one on my JMP 50 and I reckon it is great. Way better than any attenuator I've used. Let's face it, NMV Marshalls are unusably loud without something to tame the volume (unless you're playing in a stadium). I've played a few JCM800s, and none of them sounded as good to my ears... YMMV, etc.

Once you cascade the gain stages and add a MV on a 1959/1987 it's not that far off from a 2203/2204.
If you're bludgeoning it with fuzzes then I guess a non-cascaded JMP would react better than a 2203/2204 though.

Actually it is rubbish for fuzz, sadly. Treble boosters work great, but nothing hairier.
You have now got me thinking about getting the PPIMV reversed and trying it without... (I bought it already modded).

Hmm my JMP doesn't like my OD's much, a clean boost or EQ pedal is fine thou.
My JCM800 loves everything. My fav.

I played around with many iterations of PPIMV, attenuators and the like.
PPIMV screws with the amp negative feedback when you are running it very quietly. The louder you turn the amp up, the more this negates the effect.
I settled upon the belief that a well designed MV style amp is the best way forward for Marshall style tones.

Yes, rubbish for fuzz. Totally uncontrollable. Good though with a TS dialed up for volume and down for gain.
