No sparkling cleans here. This wants to be on the edge of madness at all times. It's kinda like a halfway cranked AC30 in that regard. It "sounds" clean but it isn't. I'll do some embarrassing tone clips later.Conway wrote:Does it do a clean tone or break-up very quickly?

So what’s a nice small & light boutique amp in the 5-10 watt range with a less than 12” speaker that is nice clean with a touch of hair when pushed???

Re: NAD - Supro 1605r
I've been changing 6V6 tubes in this just now. As per my other experiments with 65Amps stuff, the modern 6V6's sound better in this amp. The JJ comes out first but it has that usual rattle which drives me nuts. Second in line, and close is the new Mullard. It's more complex sounding but lacks the bottom end of the JJ. Third place is a long way off and NOS 50's stuff. Just doesn't suit what's going on in here. Yet, JJ's in my old Princeton are not a go. So there ya go - modern amps probably are voiced for the fuller sound from JJ's and Mullard.
As an aside, this amp is built like any high end amp - Matchless, JMI etc. The cab panels fit very tightly and all the screws are actually machine bolts, going into counter sunk wood nuts. The wiring and quality of the components is very good. These should really be viewed as booteek amps.

Master volume remember - as loud or quiet as you want. It can stay clean for a long time. Wedding gig volumes for sure.Conway wrote:Still tempted by these. Tell me more. How loud before it breaks up?

Yes. Turn MV to full and then lift the pre volume.
