update - my amp build saga (no dirty details)
Just an update
Many of you will recall I had contracted a local amp builder to make a 6g6 style bassman. But said builder disappeared along with 2k of my cash.
Without going into any details, and with a significant amount of help from another forumite I have retrieved:
1. A functional chassis (though it needed a service and the tone stack was wired incorrectly). It does sound fantastic though.
2. Spare tubes
3. tolex and grill cloth plus various pieces of amp hardware.
4. My jensen c12n
Still out of pocket, as I am paying live sound to build the cab but at least im not completely in the hole and will get a really nice functional amp out it.
Its basically a 6g6 bassman, but with tremolo. It has pentode/triode switch and half power switch, bright switch, master volume, presence and adjustable output impedence. Mercury magnetics and JJ tubes. The build quality is really really good. I will post it when it is complete.
Just wanted to say that at least there has been some closure with this.
Thanks

Yes it's quite a different beast.Reg18 wrote:A good result given the circumstances I guess?
Is the 6g6 much different from
The likes of a modern reissue?
Think blonde bassman , Brian Setzer ,.early surf tones. Fairly clean. The presence control is integral to the sound. Big transformers .

Master volume is interesting....for a Fender sound. Be keen to hear it in anger in due course.

It's rather clean , even with the master dialled back and gain up. I think some preamp tube jiggery is in order. It does sound d really sweet with master at mid day. It's phenomenally loud. Like. Stupidly loud. Even with an attenuator at full it is frightening to turn the gain up beyond 2-3GrantB wrote:Master volume is interesting....for a Fender sound. Yeh, certainly gives a bit of closureSimonHirst wrote:Great to hear Strummers!! But does it surf?!!

Oh she surf's allright !
Actually it's got a really nice scooped blackface thing going on, but with a bit more oomph. The gigantic mercury magnetics are punishing.
Yep . Totally surfable

Yay!
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.
