Marshall crunch tone valve amp for under $400?

Post by werdna »

A friend of mine wants a Marshall sounding valve amp. It needs to be 15 to 50 watts. The tone needs to be available at both high and low volume. It needs to cost less than $400. Not interested in new amps, just second hand ones.

What should he be looking out for on TM please?

Might be able to find a BlackStar HT series amp around that price bracket.

Tough but doable... I'd try pick up a $300-400 Jet City JCA20 then rewire the preamp into a JCM800 or Brown eye. Then you'd have an equivalent of one of those new marshall studio amps
The JCA20 isnt bad stock but maybe a little too modern sounding to really pull the Marshall thing off.

Jet city good for modern yeah. The JC i had (100w) was 6L6 and real good for high gain nonsense. Classic Marshall not so much.
Perhaps the bloke will fall in love with it though. :D

The crunch channel is a hot rodded Marshall. The OD channel is essentially a poor man's Soldano.
Before I modded my JCA 22h, I could get any crunch sound that my band mate could through his DSL, with little difference in tone.

But if you mean Plexi when you say classic Marshall then yeah, not enough headroom and too much bass in the circuit to pull that off.

the early 80`s Solid State marshalls are fanflippintastic. the models from the 800 series. I bout mine for 130 bux complete with Celestion g70
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.
