Fryette Power Station to amplify unpowered Kemper?

Post by Molly »

Been thinking about buying a Fryette Power Station to amplify a Kemper. Despite well-informed advice to the contrary I really want to use my new Barefaced cab with the Kemper. If I buy the powered unit and footswitch it's 800 quid more than the unpowered floor unit. The Fryette is 700 quid. And I guess I'd have the other advantages that come from owning one.

Anyway, for those who know what it is (Steve ;-) do you think it'd be a realistic choice? Just 60w (EL84 I thnk) instead of the powered Kemper's 600w (solid state).

Cheers.

P.S. Just sold my AC30vr and the Katana so I've no amp at the mo. :-(

I’m no expert but in theory it can act as a straight power amp from what I’ve read. Curious to see what you end up with as I’ve been considering a Kemper Floor unit with a smaller power amp
Like the Seymour Duncan Power Stage 170 as well. Would need to sell my whole rig to do it though and I just love my 5e3 so not sure I can follow through.

How’s the cab sound?

I looked at the SD thing too on Oldie's advice but though it's a nice simple solution it's 350 quid and too close to the price of the Fryette to consider.

Kemper owner here- I think you would be best to steer clear of a power amp that is going to add its own character.

Ace from Skunk Anansie uses the Freyette, but he uses it with his direct profiles which only have the preamp of his amps.

I have a couple of these on the way https://celestion.com/product/200/f12x200/ which I'll be using with my Matrix poweramp. If you dropped one of these in your cab and powered it with a neutral sounding poweramp, you would be on a win.

I'll look into that speaker. Thanks.

I think the Fryette should be pretty neutral since the object of it is to make small amps louder. I suppose I also like that it's such a handy bit of kit to have.

Yeah, I might be wrong in that regard. As soon as I saw that it had tubes in it I made assumptions.

Can't say it won't to some extent but should be OK I think.

Will definitely look into that speaker, ta. Could be a tidy wee rig.

I use the tube section of my amp now (to power my AX8). It certainly adds some extra realism, especially for cleans. I like it.

Haven't tried the fryette though.

Mate I've been telling you to just buy one for yonks. So many uses and yes I don't see why it wouldn't make a decent Kemper power section. Two 6l6's so 50 watts output. Handy for reducing the power on the valve head you'll buy once the simulation path starts to meander. Just think of all the great amps you've previously parted company with over volume issues.

What's the Boss Tube Expander worth over there in comparison? I'm sure that would do a decent job of it too.

Like the Seymour Duncan Power Stage 170 as well. Would need to sell my whole rig to do it though and I just love my 5e3 so not sure I can follow through.

How’s the cab sound?
Did you ever try running the 5e3 thru chur's badcat unleash? (assuming he turned up to one of the gearfests ive skipped in the last while).way better option than a SD as far as load box/small amp to gig sound goes.

Nah I haven't been a to a gearfest to date. I do still have an Unleash V2 laying about doing not much nowadays. Only way I'm playing my valve amps nowadays is via a Captor and IR loader.
