Mesa 'R2 Volume mod'

Post by robnobcorncob »

In stock form the mesa Mark III series amps (black dot, purple striple, green stripe, blue stripe, red stripe) have a volume drop or boost when you switch to the 'Rhythm 2' channel (this channel has no volume or gain control of its on, it's controlled by the volume of Rhythm 1 which is the clean channel) this mod added a volume control over R2 so I can balance it with R1 and the 'Lead' channel.

So I did it this morning, info here:

I didn't have a spare 250k audio taper pot so I'm using the existing reverb pot (my Mark III doesn't have the reverb tank so I'm not losing anything) which I think is 25k, works fine. Took all of 10 minutues, (5 minutes just to get the chassis out) and only took 4 solder joints . It sounds a lot better now, I can have R2 louder than clean or quieter and being able to balance the 3 channels is no longer a nightmare!

. Just gotta build a footswitch for the graphic EQ and then I'll be happy (for now..)
