Peavey 5150 etc

Post by Darth Sabbathi »

Amp-wise, I've been contemplating getting something a bit more high gain for a while.

Which has got me looking at 5150, 6505 type amps. But I don't know shit about them really. And there are a few flavours out there - Peavey vs EVH, I, II, III, plus, combos, etc, etc. What's good? And what should be avoided?

Avoid the 1x12" combos, the general consensus is that those weren't very well built.
I prefer the EVH III to the Peavey ones but the III is a slightly different beast circuit-wise.

5150 was actually derived from Soldano's design so you can look into a Hot Rod or Avenger too. These have a bit more clarity than the 5150's.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

I've had an original signature 5150 and a later 5150II, which became the 6505 and 6505+ after EVH pulled his endorsement. I preferred the block letter, the II just didn't seem to have the grunt of the BL and was a bit more tame. They can be tweaked into absolute monsters, especially when paired with a decent cab (Mesa are popular). Don't waste money on a 5150 cab, they aren't particularly nice sounding (can of angry wasps element to it).

Thanks for that. Yeah, there is a 112 going cheap on TM at the moment... doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would suit that configuration!

There is also mkI going that is local to me. But it is pretty rough... guy has listed it a number of times now. $850 is the current asking price. It is missing two knobs - he has replacements, but hasn't put them on... which makes me think the shafts are shafted. I mean, if you've got the knobs, you'd think you'd stick them on to sell it, right?

These in decent shape goes for ~$1000 all the time, so I'd say hold on until the next one comes up.

I still have a suspicion that that one is my old amp, which went "missing" when a rather dubious mate looked after it for me.

I've had a few 5150s over the years.
I currently have Kris' 6505 sitting in my guitar room to have a jam on.

The 6505 is exactly the same as a 5150 (Ignore anyone who says otherwise) but peavey had to stop using the 5150 name after Van Halen left.

I know Kris is selling this head, it's in perfect condition and sounds damn good. He was after less that that crappy one you mentioned before too!

Apparently misconception that came from Peavey shippng the 6505 with budget valves, which didn't sound great. A quick valve swap and all was well.
