Rat Alternatives

Post by Pastasauce »

Are the Rat 2's decent pedals?

And what are the Rat clones out there? Particularly ones available in NZ. I don't mind if they're a bit corksniffy.

I've thought about one of these aswell. Peper's Pedals did a "RAD" rat clone not too long ago. Maybe you could find out if they're still available

I'd be keen to hear his thoughts.

A swift googling tells me the JHS All American is one option.

Not strictly a Rat because it is a hybrid design that is part Tone Bender and part Rat, but sounds good:

The Mooer is great, it's very much a screw-top though.

I didn't like the eno with my ac15c1, sounded way better with a muff style fuzz :)

I have been ratted out HOHO!

So with Voxen, run it with gain below 12 and as much vol as you dare - best is to try and set the gain low enough that the bass response is juuuust kicking in and loads of vol to pummel the preamp - don't bother using it for brootz.

Avoid a new bog standard Rat 2, You Dirty Rat or Turbo are better quality and mods are easy.

The ENO Rat was placed side by side with an '80s Rat 2 and there is no difference (good for budget)

Big Box RI Rat is worth a punt if you see one - if it has an LM308 on the left side of the board, you're a winner!

Mudhoney's are lightly tweaked rats with a low gain option (they labelled it boost but it's actually the opposite) and I really like what they did.

Out of my Silverpistol range, the Bronson with the diodes in hard clipping is in the ballpark but much more refined - I'm looking to add my Rat version to the line up soon.

TL;DR

Cheap = ENO Rat
Legit = tweaked You Dirty Rat (swap out diodes, chip, and a cap)
Boutique = Mudhoney
Plug for Silverpistol = Bronson

It's where you clip off a leg of the 47Ω resistor - gives you more bass and lower gain - definitely worthwhile

There is a KLD one with a switch on it for $50 and free post from the mpc website.
I had the ts808 copy when they sold them years ago - same enclosure, different colour, sturdiest pedal I've ever come across.
