Thanks heaps bro that's really useful...it seems that once the Ash has spoken, the time for discussion is ended  ! It's given me enough to think about to delay the decision in any case. I contacted the shop in the states and repeated your comments and they replied..."he is correct in many ways and Not correct in others. PRS in the early days made some really bad sounding pickups. Throughout the years and certainly in the last 5-7 years the pickups PRS has ben producing are way way better. The Tremonti pickups are very popular in the USA and Mark does play the exact pickups."

But as I said, I have enough doubts now to take my time and not rush into anything (can't really afford them right now anyway if I'm sensible). I had a look on the dimarzio website and the ones that you have suggested look really good. I used their 'pickup picker' feature and the 'super distortion' came up - would that be another option?

The Super Distortion is Dimarzio's classic hotrod pickup, their equivalent of SD's JB. Between the two of them, they feature in a large proportion of American hard rock and metal recordings done from the late '70s to mid '80s.

It's an old design though, I think they have done better since those days.

Thanks Ash - see, once you have spoken no one has anything to add (and not just on this thread)! Maybe BG should add a new 'guitar guru' title to the ratings - or at least just to yours!
