My guitarist has a Duncan '59 and a Alnico Pro in his SG. They're both pretty sweeet for mid to high gain, he doesn't tune down though.

Yeah I've found lower/medium to medium high output pickups do a far better job with high gain amps like B52's, peaveys etc. Allows the amp to do most of the driving and just generally clears up everything

I'm not a fan of the 498's at all and I understand what you say re treble. The Classic 57's from Gibson sound pretty good to me, and keeps it in the same brand if that's important. I really like Gibson T top pickups if you're wanting to venture into vintage parts...still can be had for the price of a hand made new something a rather (BN for eg).

I have an old DiMarzio PAF, probably mid 70s, which sounds incredibly good too...but again vintage.

Good luck with your quest - hard to beat a good sounding SG for an all rounder!

Yeah, even with the 498 practically touching the strings it was still bass heavy!

I find it really hard to pick gear cause everyone plays different styles, with different eq settings etc...and it seems like no one has a b52 stealth amp!

But for me, the way i play and the style of music i play my sg is doing perfectly...next on the list, a brighter neck pickup!

Also had a play around with pre amp tube positions, loving the electroharmonix in v1 followed by a jj in v2

It might look a bit weird, but I am loving the Rio Grande Vintage Tallboy in my SG, much clearer than a humbucker 8)

Hurdy Gurdy.... some how... and I'm not entirely certain how mind you, an instrument that sounds like someone has shoved a nest of angry hornets into a goose with a kazoo bill and is randomly slapping the poor creature with an accordion.... Sounds amazing.
