Reggae pickup choices
I've got a guy asking me to recommend pickups for reggae and a bit of light rock playing. My guess is that anything in the vintage mold is going to be a fine starting point. For the guitar he's considering, a humbucker and a P90 is the likely format, but it's wide open at this stage.
Any of you skanky types got a preference for pickups?

Re: Reggae pickup choices
For a humbucker I'd suggest something low output and PAF-like. Top of the pile for me is the Lollar imperial. on a budget, I'd go for a dimarzio PAF over the duncan '59.ash wrote:I've got a guy asking me to recommend pickups for reggae and a bit of light rock playing. Humbucker in the bridge and a stash tin in the neck.

+1
Low output 'vintage' voiced stuff. The lil59 in my tele is about the upper limit of grunt you'd need... possibly a tad over the top depending on the amp your dude has. For this application you're probably better off wiring as a splittable humbuckers for some versatility.

BAHAHHAHAHAAHHA Gold, a fake PAF that the top slides down on would be perfect!hamo wrote:Humbucker in the bridge and a stash tin in the neck.

Re: Reggae pickup choices
Thanks guys. The DiMarzio PAF and a very low-wind Ash P90 is pretty much what I was thinking of.
The PAF may give way for a tele bridge pickup, though.

Re: Reggae pickup choices
I'm late to the party, but if it needs to be humbucker sized, a Phat Cat would be my choice. Even better and more versatile would be P-Rails. Btw, I'm after some. Do you have any?

Re: Reggae pickup choices
Don't have any P-rails, but can get some for you.
Looks like this guitar will now be classic tele format, so that cuts the choices down a lot.
Any thoughts on tele neck pickups for reggae?
I'm guessing one would be fine as long as it's not too weedy sounding.

Re: Reggae pickup choices
i reckon a quarter pounder and a lil59, volume knob and a coil/gain tap in place of tone knob.ash wrote:Looks like this guitar will now be classic tele format, so that cuts the choices down a lot.

Just like mine in fact if the price is right i'd consider selling it.

Re: Reggae pickup choices
There's so much difference between reggae setups he could have anything!
Anything with a lot of bite and cut would do really...a standard tele would probably be my natural pick for a stock reggae guitar, so yeah...not much help I suppose.

Re: Reggae pickup choices
I'd definitely go for a J-90 in the neck position. Jazzmasters skank really well. Tele bridge is a goer too.
