Anyone like them some Pearly Gates?

Post by slash-ed »

The Epiphone LP I just got seems to have a weird combination of SD JB in the neck (!!) and Pearly Gates in the bridge.

Just wondering if anyone's had any experience with the Pearly Gates they'd care to share? Thinking of putting that into my LPC to experiment with, but I dislike wiring LPs, and would rather not poke around my LPC's guts too much either, so I'm interested in seeing what everyone says before doing that.

Or, I could just order some of those Alnico Slash pickups SD have brought out

You got me there. a) I'm too lazy to screw them back in, and b) I have neighbours that I try and be considerate to by not cranking the amp once it gets past a certain time, which leads on to c) my amp sounds shit at whisper volumes and would thus have no value to this evaluation at all

Have you played the SD AlnicoPro IIs? The neck is fucking gorgeous but I've certainly had better bridge pickups. Makes sense too I guess because it's not like anybody raved about Slash's rhythm tone.

I've got an Alnico II Pro neck in the Mock, but haven't tried a bridge one yet. The new Slash ones are supposed to be sliiightly overwound, which would probably suit me.

I dunno, heaps of people seem to have an interest in replicating the tones from Appetite in general, rhythm tones included, judging from the spate of Appetite gear coming out - AFD amp, AFD LP, bla bla bla. Haha.

I had the alnico pro II set in an ESP Eclipse I CTM for a while. Was awesome. Very very clear sounding. Neck pickup was awesome bridge pickup not so much. Big sounding guitar.

The Pearly Gates sounded pretty sweet in the old Lone Star Strats.

Too screechy/trebly in the bridge at least, could've been his guitar. I haven't heard/used an SD HB I like yet. On the other hand all SD SC's i've tried/heard are awesome.

I have a set of double creams in my 02 LP .
Great pickups IMO the really made a big difference.
Very clear with that so called honk you hear about in LPs
I swapped out the BB 1&2 set for them
the jb 59 combo are a safe bet for most and the pg in there is an interesting
option. I have a couple of other SD sets I should try them against and a set of WRC crossroads

I think you are going to have to wait until daylight to try them

Is it a bridge Pearly Gates or a neck one?

JBs are always bridge-only, so having it in the neck is a bit bodgy. Unless it's wired in parallel which is not unheard of.

Swap them over for good times.

Pearly Gates is a very similar pickup to the Alnico 2 Pro. One is biased towards the slug coil and the other towards the screw coil (I can never remember which), but they have the same magnets and same wire and similar overall power. The PG is a bit hairier and ballsier than the average PAF and the A2Pro is a bit smoother and clearer.

PG in the bridge and A2Pro in the neck of a LP is a good thing. Or PG in the neck with something hotter in the bridge. PGs are one of the more expensive SD pickups.

Sticker says PGB so I'm guessing bridge. Are they the same, the neck/bridge ones?

All I've got to say is, Pearly Gates is a lame name for a rock pickup
