'78 Ibanez Super 80 (Flying Fingers) Naked!
Hi Guys, I have just pulled apart an old 1978 Super 80 and thought some here would be interested in what I found.
The construction I found here was quite different to anything I have seen in the past, for the dual slug design. Still, I am quite a noob with these things, so may have missed it.
Anyway, here she is:
Original catalog
The pup
Interesting construction.
It appears to have the ceramic mag in the middle as per normal, but two magnets of the outside as opposed
to using packers.
The tape is placed over the whole lot to keep it all together before it is packed in wax.
While mentioning wax, the coils do not look like they were wax sealed unless this was done before the final construction. As you can see the wax forms the back for the stamp and acts like the 'glue' holding it all together.
The trick here appears to be the base-plate (or lack of one) as shown in this pic:
The base is approx the width of the main magnet, allowing the wax to get into the areas around the slugs and seal the pup nicely
Hope you enjoyed my tour of a super 80

Interesting. I don't suppose you have compared Super 70's and Super 80's? I love my Super 70's.

No, definitely not me but have read up on the topic. These are higher output and brighter than the Super 70's in many peoples opinions, but again it comes down to taste as these pups are much loved also.badmotor wrote:Interesting. They say the switch from the 70's to the 80's caused a bit of a stir which lead Ibanez to create the Super 57.

Hi ! Have you had any microphonic problem with these pickups ? Do you think it would be possible to "repot" them if so happened ?
I would be happy to fix this on my Ibanez.

thanks to this thread i had the balls to take the covers of the Hamer last night, they were added aftermarket. the real deal old Dimazio Pafs didnt have any wax and that is why the covers vibrated. so it looks ultra mean now without the nickle covers.

I love the completely meaningless oscilloscope plot in the original advert
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

The two HB non-Gibson pickups I've played that really caught my ear were DiMarzio's, from the early 70's and Ibanez Super 70's.
