My Maserati does 185...
So, I've become a little obsessed with Joe Walsh recently. And with my recent disgusting descent into Strat-liking I've been wondering a little about Strat pickups.
When you hear the opening notes to Life's Been Good (if you didn't get the title reference), what pickups would you suggest to capture that sort of tone? I know Joe is a bit of a gear whore but it sounds like a fairly "classic" sound... just that I am generally unfamiliar with "classic" Strat sounds, since up till recently I was wholly uninterested in them
And in a more general sense, those of you who have been through the gamut of different single coils looking for a certain sound or tone - what pickups did you settle on, and did they get you the intended tone?
As a side note, I have no idea what neck SC is in my HRR Strat, but I did discover (when borrowing my drummer's Roadworn) that it kicks the ass of whatever they're putting in the Roadworns...

If you make it to next GF (and if I do also) young Ed, don't forget to try out my Strat for another take on Strat sounds. You might as well hear everything available to you, otherwise you'll have nowt to buy & sell...
Anyway, wtf is Joe Walsh? Is he Joe South's brother?

Oh and btw thanks for the offer Rog. Would be very keen.
Ah yes I'm aware Joe has been seen with Carvins but it's more his single-coil sounds that I'm interested in.nzsimon1 wrote:Joe now plays one of these http://www.jansen.co.nz/product.php?b=&sku=CT6MFDK6

Re: My Maserati goes 185...
Don't you mean "My Maserati does 185" ? Or am I missing a pun?
I thought the start of Life's Been good is Strat bridge pickup...maybe with some treble rolled off? I'm not a Joe Walsh aficionado though, except knowing that it was him that Jimmy Page got his No 1 Les Paul off.

Yes, but WHAT pickup, is the question
Although I've seen someone on the interweb claim that the producer says it was a Les Paul. But it sounds very single coil to me, personally.

Re: My Maserati does 185...
I attended a Kurzweil keyboard workshop some time ago. The presenter was excellent and he used Joe Walsh as an example. Several times he said things along the lines of "Joe Walsh ain't the brightest cookie in a barrel of monkeys with frontal lobotomies, but even he can drive one of these". Apparently he's a dumb as buttah, or Firefox.
See, Ed - I really did know who he is, but only through the Eagles.

Re: My Maserati does 185...
Strats sound like strats no matter what breed of pup in my opinion. More so with that biting single coil in the bridge. I can hear some kind of post additive/effect there but still it's not a must. Just balls to the wall & play it like ya stole it.

Re: My Maserati does 185...
Well, that's what I would have thought, but playing my drummer's Roadworn vs my Strat there definitely was a huge difference, and since the Roadworns are supposed to be thin finish, less pieces of wood for the body, etc etc good things, I could only conclude that pickups made the difference there...

Re: My Maserati does 185...
for that classic strat sound you know you want one thats been dipped in plastic...
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.
Re: My Maserati does 185...
I'll chime in with my usual 'raised brow' suggestion
I stuck Dimarzio YJM stacked coils into my '88 USA and they sounded fantastic Absolutely slayed the stock pickups in my 2010 USA Strat. They are low output, hum-free and have heaps of clarity with good tight Bass response. Bonus being they sound bloody good when you overdrive them too (Which I have a feeling you are rather partial to)...unlike stock Strat single coils which sound like ass.

Re: My Maserati does 185...
I took the dimarzios (hs3s) out of my malmsteen strat because they sounded dull and will put in duncan quarter pounds shortly because they kick arse...........I think joe might agree......well probably not, but richie blackmore would if he still played electric guitarVorbis wrote:I'll chime in with my usual 'raised brow' suggestion

Re: My Maserati goes 185...
good feature yes....but a split humbucker never really "gets there" in terms of a great single coil sound IMOnzsimon1 wrote:
Single coil switchable just lift the tone knob and becomes a single coil guitar , good feature
