I tried some Lollar Blackface and didn't like them as much as the Bare Knuckles.

This thread has some useful clips comparing various BKP singles:

Listening to that makes me think I should have got Apaches, definitely sound the nicest to me on those clips.

I don't know, but what I do know is that I was perfectly happy with my amp until he said that, and from then on I could hear nothing but confused mid-range every time I used it. He better not bloody say anything bad about my Dr Z.

Regarding the pickups, the answer is Bare Knuckles. The Mother's Milks did the trick for me after quite a lot of pickup swapping, not as hot as texas specials but more like a fairly fat vintage pickup. Supposedly based on a 60's Strat. I hear the Apache's are the business too.
Dr Z's have resentment issues and are prone to bouts of depression, especially in the low end

Did you manage to try one yet?

I just played mine at band prac through the new Thiele cab, and it sounded pretty great. Then I tried it through an Orange 2x12" which proceeded to sound even more HUGE. But the Orange cab weighs at least 2 1/2 times more than the Thiele so I'm stoked. :)

(Mine's ash/maple and much more resonant than some Strats I've played).

There's your problem. Alder and brazilian rosewood would sort you out.

I'm not a master. I'm a very naughty boy.

But I do like Duncan Alnico Pro 2s. And Fralins are nice.

Was going to suggest also it may be the wood, not the pups...I had a Mexi body that nothing sounded good with...got an allparts alder one from Iain and bam, sorted.

So you really should replace everything.

And never, ever listen to Hot_Grits....

Pickup selection might be the most difficult choice we face; and the hardest one to resolve. I have Alnico Pro2s in my Black Tele. They lived in the Korinacaster until the Lollars completely changed my world. The Texas Specials went into the Strat because the original 54's were way too hot. Go figure.
I also tried Antiquities but I found them thin and a bit raspy. They ended up in a Tokai I never liked much which is now a mate's favourite Strat. (I still don't like it much.)

Sooty, thanks for the Bareknuckle link; that was worth a listen though it may have increased the dither.

Benderissimo, thanks for your offer. I think Ash may be the final solution here. I have just scored the loan of a set of original 1968's so I'll install them and see what happens. I hate bothering folk like Ash and Ryan until I know what I want and am ready to pull the trigger. If I decide to take it to Ash, I would appreciate a tryout of your pup first.

Kdawg2a: Alder/rosewood strat....nomnomnom :D
