EMG 18V Mod on an LTD EC1000 Delux
I want to do the 18V mod to my EMGs but have the problem that the battery cut out in the back of the guitar only just has room for one 9V battery, let alone two.
Any ideas of how to get around this?
Also off topic a bit but any suggestions for if I don't like the mod what I pick ups I could look at using instead of the EMGs. Don't play as much metal as I use to, more rock/punk.

Put the other battery in the cavity with the volume/tone controls if it will fit. I once did it that way on a guitar with a battery box.

Like Rob says, you can chuck one in the control area as well, however if theres room in there for two, even better, then you can wire it up like this:
I'm going to do this to my 8 string shortly, and if they still don't sound as good as blackouts I might have to buy some of them!
You might still be able to do this removable way if you have enough room in the battery cavity to squeeze in two battery snaps

If you want to stay active, SD Blackouts. If you're not fussed, maybe SD Invaders?

Dimarzio D'Activators are looking like they are becoming the non-boutique pickup of choice for teh br00tz, especially on ERG's, almost tempted to try some on the 8, but its hard to beat actives for no noise and awesome feedback control.

As per the others, I just chucked my extra battery in the tone/vol cavity.
Reckon you'll like the difference though, not heard SD Blackouts, but the 18V mod brings a lot more warmth and fullness to the EMGs, the sterility they have often been accused of disappears nicely. Some of the more discerning metalheads actually prefer that for their distortion sound, but I don't. Hell, you can almost get a good clean tone out of them after the mod

Yes hello!
Not been around these parts for a while, due to various life distractions, but they have mostly gone and so I'm back...

Having owned both, its a night and day difference between EMG's and Blackouts, the blackouts are way more dynamic, EQ'd quite differently and much much much better for cleans, and crisper for high gain, am going to do the 18V thing to my 808's tho', but if thats not enough I'll have to ditch themDanger Mouse wrote:As per the others, I just chucked my extra battery in the tone/vol cavity.

It's still high on my "to do" list to check out a gat with the Blackouts, I have heard great things about them, but have yet to have the chance. Ideally I need to A/B through my amp, which isn't easy. Is that compared to 18V-modded EMGs(81/85 combo)?jeremyb wrote:Having owned both, its a night and day difference between EMG's and Blackouts, the blackouts are way more dynamic, EQ'd quite differently and much much much better for cleans, and crisper for high gain, am going to do the 18V thing to my 808's tho', but if thats not enough I'll have to ditch themDanger Mouse wrote:As per the others, I just chucked my extra battery in the tone/vol cavity.

Ah now I understand (just had to google 808s). I imagine they would be quite different to the 81 in the bridge of the LTD and my BC Rich, being that they are specifically tailored to 8 stringiness. I'm just guessing on that front, though.
