Gave it ago but did not work out. I am pretty sure the batteries were set up correctly. Ammeter gave around 17V of current runnning through but then when plugged in to the guitar I would get no sound. 9V still works fine but could not get the 18V to work?

Are they rechargeables? if so they're only likely to be about 8.5 volts :)

Actually looking at your wiring you've done it wrong, the red and black wires going into the guitar need to be swapped :)

Are you sure? The diagram you supplied has the coloring wrong for + and - at the first battery snap.

*edit*
Actually, colours are right.. but the symbols are wrong. So yeah that means you need to switch them as JB said.

Symbols are right too ;) It has to be reversed since you're clicking the two connectors together :)

I guess. They are correct by implication. But not if you treat it as a stand alone unit.
If the battery snap has symbols stamped on it, they won't match.

Given that it is a sketch for 'paint by number' electricians, you'd expect it to show what the person will see.
It's not exactly an accurate schematic.
