What wonderous things they are, why aren't more people using them???

Love them, but for the amount of gain I like to use... hum city. And I don't like to have to rely on having a noise gate or whatever, so they won't work for me.

Yeah it's just the noise that puts me off, otherwise they'd probably be my main pickup. I reckon most of the single coil recordings I like are actually p90s. The good thing about single coils nowadays is that there is a wealth of noise canceling options. Not many good ones for p90s.

But isn't the hum only an issue when you're not playing? Volume pot, or pedal? I've only recently discovered the joy of single coils, and I'm gagging for some p90 action!

At moderate to lots of moderate levels of gain they are fine noise wise. I have them in my home built breadboard, 3 of them in fAct, and they sound awesome. The hum is negligible. If you can hear the hum over a drummer, something is wrong with your drummer.

my recently aquired fret king has hum cancelling in pos 2 and 4 ,i just flick it there if there is a break or switch the pedal off:)

Love them. Not all are created equal though. Early 50s Gibson are the best to my ears. VVG do a great P90 as does Ash. Modern Gibson not too bad...different construction though from the originals.

I rate the early ones up there with buttery pafs.

I'm a huge P90 fan, though the ASH J90's in my Yamaha are the closest thing I have. I had a P90 Radian on loan for a couple of gigs and it was superb. I pretty much used the neck P90 the whole time and just played with the volume knob to keep the hum under control.

I gig with humbuckers and I'm perfectly happy with them for a live sound but whenever I've sat down and recorded my guitar playing I find the humbuckers are missing something. I end up playing either the J90s or a strat, the tone in my head has that single coil bite.

Next guitar will have to have some P90s.

I LOVE my Reverend Jetstream 390. I also just bought a Tokai AS60 and I'm having Dave Berry install KA P90s along with a total rewire, new pots, switches etc. A fine guitar that should love P90s.
