PRS Sc pu's big change
Acquired my first PRS guitar recently. Has been owned previously by a few forum members under the nam The Hulk.
Anyhow while I have always felt PRS guitars sounded a little wooly in the mids I just loved the feel of the neck which is much friendlier in my stffening hands than my Gibsons.
Yesterday I noticed the pu polepieces were all level with the pu top and finding the top e string faded out with large bends, decided to up the top two pole screws.
They were extremely hard to shift and when finally moving a waxy crap came out of the screw holes. Sound from the strings over the moved screws changed noticeably so I loosened all of them, again resulting in the production of wax.
End result is the guitar now has more chirp in the tone, is clearer, can hear the wire on the wound strings better. Reminds me of the change when ripping out potted Gibson Classics ( which always sound a bit lifeless to me ) and replacing with unpotted handwound's..
It also now seems to have a more LP like tone... Who'd have thought such a minor tweek could make such a difference?????

So you nabbed the Hulk? Kudos man, that seems like a monster guitar.

Pole height can have a dramatic effect, definitely adds more treble raising them, handy if you have muddy pickups

Re: PRS Sc pu's big change
Agreed, I've just never experienced such a notable overall change in characteristics short of a major change like new pu's.
Pole screws waxed tight is a new one for me too.
But there again I've never had a Prs before so maybe it's familiar behaviour.

I think I may change that pattern.. Might have to get another one now I've finally lost my virginity. Maybe a DGT...It is. It's crazy none of us have kept it....
A guitar tech mate of mine who got them cheap direct from Prs was always trying to convert me in the early 90's but I was too caught up with old goldtops at the time...Much catching up to do..

Re: PRS Sc pu's big change
Hope the pickups don't get microphonic... ie whistle and shriek like a pig at loud volume... if they do, you'll know why, thats what the wax is for. You can re-pot them if required, so no need for panic

A Blankenship C45 through a couple of Fane 12axa's among other things..Tell 'em what you're playing it through. That amp's a bit special.

Re: PRS Sc pu's big change
Yup. still have the one that came from you plus another which is not quite so played in and so not yet as sweet..
(I sometimes run one with a Celestion Gold which when new was quieter than the Fanes however over time it has become louder and now dominates despite a slightly lower efficiency rating..)
