Pickup covers + different wood =?

Post by StratMatt »

Hey team,

My PRS is in need of a pickup upgrade. My main guitar is an Ibanez JS1000, love the pickups in this. Dimarzio FRED in the bridge and PAF Pro in the neck. I'd like something similar for the PRS, but a slightly hotter bridge. Staying with the Satriani formula that works I'm thinking a Mo Joe bridge, which is a bit hotter, and PAF Pro neck.

These guitars are obviously very different beasts. Light, basswood, bolt on neck VS chunky set neck mahogany/maple cap. Also the PRS really will need the pickups to have nickel covers, this particular guitar would just look wrong without them imo. How much difference does all this make? I imagine a fair bit, it feels like a stupid question when I write it all down  But I'm interested to see what others think I could expect.

Have you tried adjusting the pole pieces, as per this thread:http://www.nzguitars.com/forum/viewtopi ... =8&t=28499

Mind you, if you want more gain, you'e probably looking at replacements. PRS do a metal pickup, dunno what it sounds like though.

Have a spare couple hours now so I will try adjusting the pole pieces and see what that yields. Amp is warming as we speak.

I'm definitely happy to keep it, I don't really need anything else  Probably better off saving my $0.30 I spend on each TM re-list.

Not particularly after more gain - the JS pickups are fairly medium output. The stock pickups are just a little flat I feel.

I had a fred and joe in the mahogany bodied JS ash made me, they worked really well in it. No maple cap though, but good tone.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.
