Hmmmm so would this work? imagine a pickup turned 90 degrees so a single string had all 6 pole pieces under it? :mental:

well there is only one wire going to a pot

Phase may be an issue

The Turner guitar (that Lindsay Buckingham plays) takes this idea a bit further as it is fitted on a turntable, so you can choose the angle it presents to the strings.

So you are not completely mad ;-)

OK... ZT amp, Black Benny, fancy lead and CS.54 Pup. Only the best!

Test was sloppy and imprecise; just held it over the strings as consistently as I could. Some kind of a jig would be preferable. Despite that, some impressions were forthcoming.

There is a difference. There is an increase in volume (maybe 20%). There is also a loss of high frequency detail; bass E sounded fatter and warmer, high E lost some sparkle. There is also a huge increase in magnetic interference with the string which dampens sustain. This last factor makes the whole idea stupid but it was worth a try.
Cheers Jb

Not the same thing. Jb wants all the polepieces on one string.

Yes it will, check out Yuri Landman's guitars, off the scale of weirdness. I have his book Nice noise on prepared guitar and that has some great pics of his instruments with pickups rotated.
