Replacing 335 pickups without a gynecology degree?
Contemplating a set of Bare Knuckle pickups for my 335. Wondering if I can keep the wire from my existing pickups and fit a plug maybe then have a corresponding one on the BKs? Can't face the prospect of taking the pots out and trying to get them back in.
Any other lazy-arse suggestions?

I was going to do it myself, but I just couldn't face doing it - I just got our local luthier to do it - only cost $70 or something - totally worth the cost

I'd pay that if it didn't involve two 200k round trips to drop off and collect.AiRdAd wrote:I was going to do it myself, but I just couldn't face doing it - I just got our local luthier to do it - only cost $70 or something - totally worth the cost

There's a couple of (what look like) good videos on YT for it, but it still didn't look simple...

Gretsch with rear access looking more attractive?
Don't envy you that task one iota.

I've never found rear access particularly attractive....Dharmajester wrote:Gretsch with rear access looking more attractive?

Suspect all the hassle's not worth the infinitesimal difference in tone. Probably won't stop me.

My 335 has factory fitted rear access. Doesn't help you, but it's been great for me.

I've done it before - I think i used an old guitar string. Bit fiddly. You have to plan the wiring loom out and I fucked up the wire lengths the first time.

This is what I did with the Aria. Pulled out the old pups, cut off the lead as close to the guitar body as possible while still giving room to work. Soldered the Duncan leads on and spent a fiddly 30 minutes through the f hole bundling up the lead and zip tying it.Bg wrote:cut the pickups off in the pickup route, solder new ones to old wires, jobs a good un
Fortunately, the Aria pups had long leads to start with. But if you do the job properly, I can't see any problem with soldering extensions on to pup leads.
Had planned to install plugs but it got too much, finding the things then driving around Auckland to get them. Lost interest.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Re: Replacing 335 pickups without a gynecology degree?
Thanks for the replies chaps. Think I'd rather cut the wires near the existing pickups then. Sounds like the way to go. If I can find some decent plugs and can be arsed I'll add them.Slowy wrote:This is what I did with the Aria. Thinking about Bare Knuckle Mules. Had a Mule / Riff Raff combination once that I liked. Existing pickups are whatever's stock. Sound OK but nothing special.H671 wrote:What pickups are currently fitted & what are you planning to replace with?

Just on the BKP website. about an extra $25 for aged nickel covers... Hmm. Could be worth it for vanity.
In the region of $300 for a set. Assuming I don't get stung for GST that's pretty good I reckon.
