Microphonic pickups - what you think?

Post by Jay »

Ever since I created my microphonic Dominoes, I have been super conscious about pickup microphonic behaviour, ie, will tapping or stroking the pickup cover be heard thru the amp. Sometimes 'yelling' into a pickup can be heard coming thu the amp as well. (Not on my dominoes though).

Apart from that, it actually doesn not bother me and I don;t play at high volume so no issue there either.

I really like the frequency range I get out of my dominoes - very trebly on the bridge and some real nice, strong low E and A string notes without sounding muddy.

Would potting them 'destroy' some of the pickup properties?

What do you guys think/know?

I like unpotted pickups. They sound more open. A bit of microphnicity is worth it for sure.

If it’s not a problem, it’s not a problem.

You only say that because there are no photos in it...

I was hoping to hear some more opinions of plusses and minusses....

Cmon now.

Potting will lose you a little clarity if you go too heavy on it.
Sauce: epiphone pickups “come to life” when you get rid of the leagues of wax in them.

I guess at the end of the day it’s more stuff getting in the way of the magnetic field.

Make another batch, pot them, and post results.

I'd say - pot a pair and compare them to the unpotted ones. Then decide.
Hard to tell how they will change until you do it.

I call bullshit on microphonics in modern day pickups, waxed or not.

You need to do a back to back comparison. You made them.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Yeah I know it s kinky when you are in love with your guitar pickups. Poorly chosen words I must admit. How about rubbing?

All pickups are microphonic to some extent, otherwise things like TC toneprints wouldn't work :)

Not true, TC uses the magnetic field in the phone's speaker, its not the audio sound you hear that is being transferred.

Back on track now...

pot a set and test them then you will know.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
