Looking at replacing the humbuckers on an old Maton solidbody (JB6). I'm after a slightly hotter than PAF sound. So far I'm considering Duncan 59ers, EMG h2's and the Rio Grande Genuine Texas.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Gibson '57 classics? Possibly pricey though.
Good option on the cheaper side is a Kent Armstrong Hot Rod Vintage. Basically a slightly overwound PAF.

As the NZ distributor, i'm biased for obvious reasons re Rio Grande's. .
What I can tell you is that they are extremely well made by a few 'down to earth' texans. I haven't installed a set of the humbuckers as of yet, but the strat and tele vintage tallboy sets sound fantastic. The Harmony Central Reviews of the BBQ Bucker and Genuine Texas speak volumes though.
BBQ Bucker DC - 13k
Genuine Texas DC - 9.2k
PM me for 'prices'

Yeah they get a good rap in alot of the Guitar magazines too. How do you think the Genuine Texas would go in the bridge?crushing day wrote:As the NZ distributor, i'm biased for obvious reasons re Rio Grande's. .

SD 59s aren't really any hotter than any so-called "vintage" pickups. You'll need something like Pearly Gates or Custom 5 for that.

Good, if you want to pair it with a lower output neck pickup.. say around 7.5 - 8K. Like Ash said, a Duncan 59 bridge isn't particularly 'hot' (around 8K). A duncan '59 neck is around 7.5k, so that or something similar would work with a Genuine Texas in the bridge.Kerchang wrote:Yeah they get a good rap in alot of the Guitar magazines too.
