Neck pickup for a Les Paul

Post by grolschie »

Hey there, wanting to upgrade my neck pup to something that is not mud. Was thinking an SD Jazz, or maybe for something different a Kent Armstrong/Sky P90. I have no idea what P90s sound like in an LP. Your thoughts?

cheers,
grol

Guitar is an old jap Daion Les Paul. Stock ceramic chrome covered pup which sounds quite good and loud when A/B'ed with a SD JB. Stock neck pup is mud.

SD Jazz or 59 could be the ticket.

Has anybody seen the bridge?

My new favourite neck pickup: Dimarzio PAF Joe. Creamy.

I also have an SD Jazz, SD Phat Cat (P90 in HB package), SD Alnico 2 Pro, KA Kentron, KA PAF.

I'm not sure a P90 is the answer to your dilemma as described. Fat may equal mud in this guitar.

The Jazz and Kentron could be nice. Also the DiMarzio Humbucker from Hell, Eric Johnson model, Bluesbucker maybe...

Depends on what you want out of it. I currently have Duncan Phat Cats and Dimarzio Humbuckers from Hell in the necks of my gats. The Humbucker from Hell will give you a great clean sound, and is nice for solos also. The Phat Cat is great for low gain rhythm stuff, but the Humbucker from Hell kills it in every other department.

If a Humbucker from Hell doesn't sort the mud problem, then no pickup will.

Thanks fellaz. The Humbucker From Hell seems very low volume from the specs (~7k?). How would this match up with a hot bridge pup? cheers.

From another thread, I was led to believe that a P90 was the most awesome pup available? :-)

Does anyone remember laughter?

You're putting Dimarzio PAF's in Annaliesa right?

It may be a bit quieter, but that will help give you a cleaner sound. Unless you switch between your bridge and neck pickup for clean, it's not really going to matter. Personally, I've never liked the bridge pickup for clean so output differences have never bothered me.
