if so, is it judged by distance, volume, colour, smell, duration, or a combination of the above?

jb seem to come standard in most of the guitars i buy.it's the first thing to go.bought a fernandes with a full shred in the bridge-found it to be better mid gain option than the jb in a mahogany guitar.

Probably too late but I really rate Bare Knuckle pickups. I have a set of "Crawlers" (PAF style humbuckers with a bit of extra kick) and they sound awesome. The brisge pickup is 15k and can really scream. They are great for a wide range of tones and sound cool coil tapped too. Bareknuckle mules sound cool too. http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk or Mojo sound in Wellington.
