Interchanging Mini-buckers and P 90's?

Post by Kerchang »

Probably a dumb question but here we go.

Do mini-buckers and P 90's have the same physical dimensions and, therefore, can you interchange them on a guitar without having to re-rout the guitar body?

Sort of...

A mini HB is smaller than a P90, but are usually mounted in a modified P90 cover. So in most cases they are interchangeable.

Some original factory fitted Mini HBs (pickguard mounted and original USA Epiphones for example) have Mini HB specific routing and can't take a P90.

And depending on the type of guitar and whether a pickup ring was used you might have four small holes around each P-90 where the ring was...

Thanks guys.

So, what are the physical dimensions of a P 90 and/or where can you usally find info like that?

The reason I am asking is that I have my eye on a guitar on TM that is fitted with mini-buckers. I would be keen to get it and swap to a set of P-90's.

What type of guitar is it?

P90 covers are about 35x85mm.

Sweet looking Gibbo, shame about the price tag. I was looking at an Explorer type guitar (Weta custom). After the my last post I went and checked it again and its actually fitted with Gretch type humbuckers anyway - end of day dream I guess. I know you can drop P 90 type pickups in conventional humbucker routs and rings but I love the look of P 90's as well as the sound. Guess I just keep saving for that 54 Les Paul gold top replica that has my name on it LOL.

Well, as far as I know, those pickups are standard humbucker size. So you got plenty of options for humbucker-sized-P90's: Gibson, Duncan, Bare Knuckle etc
